Comox Valley Sewer Conveyance Project

Preparatory Work: Archaeological Investigations Beginning Nov. 28

Starting November 28, and lasting three to four weeks, the CVRD will be completing borehole drilling along the route to confirm the presence or absence of archaeological materials.

WHAT? The archaeological investigations will include drilling of roughly 135 boreholes in eight sections along the conveyance route.

WHERE? Test drilling will be completed along Comox Road (including Comox Hill), Beaufort Avenue and small sections of Stewart Street, Balmoral Avenue and Jane Place.

HOW? Work will be completed section-by-section, so only one area will be disrupted at a time. Single-lane alternating traffic will be required to make room for equipment.

The following schedule approximates the days and sections that will be investigated:

  • Week 1: Tuesday, November 29 to Saturday, December 3 - Beaufort Avenue from Carthew to Stewart Street (Section 5), start on Stewart Street between Beaufort Street and Comox Avenue (Section 6).
  • Week 2: Monday, December 5 to Saturday, December 10 – Complete Stewart Street (Section 6), Balmoral Avenue between Pritchard and Torrence Roads (Section 7), and Jane Place from Comox Pump Station to Beaufort Avenue (Section 8).
  • Week 3: Monday, December 12 to Saturday, December 17 –Comox Road from the Courtenay Pump Station to the Dyke Road Park, near 3035 Comox Road east toward Bayside Road, and near Bayside Road to Glacier View Drive (Sections 1 - 4).
  • Week 4: If necessary to complete all drilling work.

Protecting our ocean with a new route for sewer pipes

The Comox Valley Sewer Conveyance Project is a multi-year construction project that will replace the pipes and upgrade the pump stations that move more than 14,000 cubic metres of raw sewage each day to the sewage treatment plant on Brent Road.

This new system will route sewer pipes further inland where they will no longer be vulnerable to damage by waves, rocks and logs. About the Project

This is a significant and complex Project that starts at the Courtenay Pump Station and moves through K’ómoks land, downtown Comox and the Lazo Road area to the Comox Valley Water Pollution Control Centre (Sewage Treatment Plant) on Brent Road. There are construction impacts, traffic impacts and archaeological considerations. The CVRD is working with many jurisdictions and partners to deliver this project smoothly and efficiently and minimize impacts where we can.

  • During the conveyance construction, will there be any possibility of installing a traffic light either at Ellis or Rodello(?) to make an already tricky turn onto Comox Rd a little easier for folks living on or around Beaufort, since there will be delays on Beaufort and extra traffic on Comox Rd avoiding Beaufort?

    Hello ml – thank you for the note. While we now know the degree and general nature of disruptions along the route, more specific details like this one will be considered as part of the traffic management plan that will be developed in advance of construction. We will share your suggestion of a traffic light at Comox Road + Ellis (or Rodello) for review/consideration by the traffic engineers as they continue to confirm plans ahead. 

    To improve traffic flow in this area in the long-term, a roundabout is being planned with the Town of Comox for the Comox Ave/Rodello Street intersection, to help cars move optimally in all directions, and decrease wait times during high traffic periods.

  • Where exactly will the pipeline be located as it travels through the Lazo area? Why is this not clear on the provided maps? Why does it appear that you will be placing it through/under private properties and not following existing road/infrastructure? Would that not be the least disruptive option and decrease slightly the negative impact of this project on those residents?

    Hello – the preferred conveyance route as presented in February 2021 includes tunnelling through Lazo Hill. Due to the geography in the area, the pipe will not be able to follow existing roadways and must be located under some private properties. The map posted on this page shows the swath of land that continues to be under consideration for the route. Staff and consultants are still analyzing options for the best route and we hope to be able to update the community in the next month about where we are at with this process. Those property owners that are impacted will receive right of way compensation and will be contacted directly by the CVRD’s land agent.
